Pan
Pan
is the innermost of Saturn's satellites.
It was
discovered in 1990 by Showalter, from Voyager photos.
The satellite
lies within the Encke division of Saturn's A-ring.
Small
satellites near a ring produce wave patterns in the ring. This is also
the way how Pan was discovered. On the photos taken by voyager 10 years
earlier, a wave pattern was visible on the A-ring, that's how scientists
predicted there would be a small satellite on that position. After reexamining
the 10-year old voyager photo, was discovered.
Atlas
Atlas
was discovered in 1980 by Terrile, from Voyager photos.
Just
like Pan, Atlas is also in the A-ring.
